2008 Spring Semester Begins!

The Central University for Nationalities (CUN) is one of China’s most important comprehensive universities, and it is one of the 38 key universities receiving direct development support from the Chinese government. The goal for the Central University for Nationalities is to build up as “a first-class ethnic university in the world”.

The Central University for Nationalities has an advantageous geographical position, being located in an urban district of Beijing, and transportation is very convenient. There are many buses and a subway outside the front gate of CUN. CUN is situated in a university district, near the National Library to its south, and the Chinese “Silicon Valley”-Zhong Guan Cun high-technology industry base to its north. It has a beautiful flower-garden style campus, something rarely seen in northern China.

The Central University for Nationalities has a comprehensive set of university disciplines, and its ethnic characteristics are highly distinctive.  Humanities is its main focus and ethnic studies is its defining specialty, with courses covering the liberal arts, science, engineering, medical science, management, education, finance and economics, politics and law, physical education, art and more. At present, CUN has 21 colleges and departments, 55 bachelor’s degree programs, 62 master’s degree programs, and 23 doctor’s degree programs. Its ethnology, Chinese ethnic minority language and literature, Chinese ethnic minority art and so on which are number one in China and well-known in the world. All of the majors are open to international students. Today, CUN has a teaching faculty of 1,003 members, including 487 professors and associate professors.

At the Central University for Nationalities’ multiple cultures exist side by side harmoniously. It not only has a high-quality, top-level faculty representing many ethnic backgrounds, but also 2/3 of its 14,000 full-time students is ethnic minorities. In a sense, CUN is a microcosm of the big family of Chinese ethnic groups, and it is the only university in China where all of China’s 56 ethnic groups are represented in its faculty and student body.  The multiple cultures of the 56 ethnic groups harmoniously mix together here.

The Central University for Nationalities is one of the most well-known institutions in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language in China. It is one of the first eight universities in China that enrolled international students and began teaching and researching Chinese as a foreign language. The College of International Education is a special agency that is responsible for recruiting, teaching, managing, and service to all international students at CUN. The college’s facilities are complete, with an excellent teachers’ team, and over 90% of the full-time teachers have qualification certificates for teaching Chinese as a foreign language. For international students, CUN provides small classes (5-15 persons) and “one-to-one” Chinese language instruction.  The teachers have a great deal of teaching experience, and outside of the classroom there are tutors and study partners who help in solving the difficulties in study, and daily life.

The Central University for Nationalities offers scholarships to a portion of the excellent international students who study in regular degree programs.

International students from all over the world are welcome to study at the Central University for Nationalities.
